Holiday by Nancy Meyer

This movie stands true to its name. If you are bored and have the urge to run away, somewhere even you don’t know then Nancy Meyers’ “Holiday” is what you should be watching. 

This romantic comedy film is a story about two girls from different countries. Stuck in the loop of relationship issues, they swap homes for holidays, unaware of the surprises that lay ahead. 

Kate Winslet as Iris is a columnist for the Daily Telegraph in London, who has a kind heart but always ends up being taken for granted. Cameron Diaz plays Amanda Woods, an ambitious movie trailer producer who needs warmth in her life and so ends up staying with her ex-boyfriend.

“Holiday” is a movie about the things that most people want to do when they are bored of work, relationships, or even life for that matter. Just go on a Holiday!

Elements Trilogy; Fire, Earth, Water by Deepa Mehta

This would the one movie from Hindi Cinema on the list but is a great watch. Directed by a renowned Indo-Canadian filmmaker, the Elements trilogy is a series of three movies produced over different years.

“Fire” came out in 1996 starring Shabana Azmi and Nandita Das as the main lead. This is the first movie in the Elements Trilogy.

This movie is a story about two women married into the same family, only to end up stirring a romantic relationship between each other. “Fire” is considered to be one of the first Indian movies to portray Lesbian Relationships on screen. 

The second in the trilogy is “Earth”. It is an adaptation of Bapsi Sidhwa’s novel ‘Cracking India’. The film is a beautiful narration of the state’s intervention in friendship and love. 

Starring Nandita Das, Amir Khan, Rahul Khanna, and Maia Sethna, “Earth” illustrates the friendship of a Hindu nanny working in a Parsi home, with two Muslim men and how it changes with the news of the most dreaded 1947 India- Pakistan Partition.

“Water” was released in the year 2005, as the last part of the Elements Trilogy. The film focuses on the lives of Indian widows in 1940s Varanasi. It also draws light on controversial topics such as child marriage, misogyny, and ostracism. 

The film is set in 1930s colonial India and stars John Abraham and Lisa ray who perfectly portrays the upper class, Gandhian follower, and the widow respectively. 

Brokeback Mountain by Ang Lee

If you are one of those who think that gays only mean men with feminine mannerisms, Brokeback Mountain will expose you to the wider notion of the gay community. 

This oscar-nominated movie is a story about two cowboys played by Jack Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger, who develop romantic feelings for each other while shepherding in the Brokeback Mountains. But they go on to marry women and have a family of their own.

Brokeback Mountain intricately depicts the struggles of gay men. Their suppressed emotions, illicit affairs, instances of late gay sexual awakening, and the pressure to fit in a patriarchal society. 

Grave of the Fireflies by Isao Takahata

The last film on this list is “Grave of the Fireflies”. It is an animated war tragedy film that tells the story of two siblings, Seita and Satsuko. 

The movie illustrates the struggle of both siblings who escape America’s attack on Japan during the second world war but ends up losing their family. It is a heart-wrenching movie that will surely make you cry!
