Have you noticed that your old Macbook model is not performing that great recently? If so, why not take some action and rethink your computer maintenance strategy. It may have been a while since you last did anything for the good of the Macbook’s shape, and such long neglect is finally showing the results.

Thankfully, there are methods to refurbish the Mac and have it run with few hiccups. The suggestions in this article should help you create a solid maintenance strategy and revive the Macbook.

Suggestion #1 – Declutter Drive Storage

The lack of available storage on the hard drive or solid-state drive will spell trouble. You do not want to end up with only a couple of free gigabytes.

It takes patience to manage computer data properly, and the fact that Macs are not the best when it comes to available storage does not help either. Here are some excellent cleanup tips for dealing with the problem:

  • delete old downloads, email attachments, applications, and duplicate files
  • get rid of temporary system junk like backups, extensions, and caches
  • transfer data to external hard drives, memory sticks, or clouds
  • consume media on streaming platforms like Netflix and Spotify

Suggestion #2 – Confirm the Mac is Malware-Free

Run a custom disk scan and find out if your computer is malware-free. It is recommended to use reliable antivirus software. Sticking to the default XProtect is not the best option as some users have reported how it has done harm instead of good.

Even an insignificant malware or virus can cause computer performance issues. Making sure that the system is secure from cybersecurity threats will let you cross one item off the list of potential causes.

Suggestion #3 – Quit Unnecessary Background Apps

Preserve computer resources. There is a finite amount of resources, and having redundant background applications consume them is a common issue.

Some computer users do not bother properly quitting an app when they finish using it. Moreover, they have too many items in the startup app list, meaning that random applications load each time you start the computer.

Activity Monitor shows which processes are consuming the most resources. Close any app you do not need at the time, and it should help with the overall Macbook performance

Suggestion #4 – Clean the Filth Inside the Macbook

Do not let the dust inside the laptop get out of hand. You need to remove the filth regularly or hire someone who can do the work for you. It is no secret that taking a Macbook apart is risky, and many are reluctant to attempt it themselves. Take the Mac to a computer service store and leave it in the hands of professionals.

Removing dirt inside the Macbook will reduce overheating and internal fan noises. However, if you are still unhappy, you can get a cooling pad – a neat accessory that provides a source of cool air for the computer.

Suggestion #5 – Disable Visual Effects

Gimmicks like a backlit keyboard or opening animations for the Dock are more or less useless. Instead of admiring Macbook’s visual effects, take a more pragmatic approach, and disable them.

At the end of the day, the goal is to fix the underperforming computer, and freeing up resources from visual effects will help.

Suggestion #6 – Invest in New Hardware If Possible

Not all Macbooks are compatible with new hardware, but if you allows for it, replacing or adding extra would improve the laptop’s speed.

Some of the most popular hardware change examples include replacing an HDD with an SSD, adding extra memory, and getting an external graphics processing unit.

Suggestion #7 – Declutter Desktop

Your Macbook’s desktop should be clutter-free. Each icon on it hinders the performance as the system has to render desktop files when you switch between the desktop and other tabs.

It may be more convenient to access favorite apps and important documents when they are on the desktop. Still, given what this setup does to Mac’s performance, you would be better off relocating desktop icons to another location.

Suggestion #8 – Prevent Memory Leaks

Applications running for a while start to relocate their memory where the memory should not go. The phenomenon is known as memory leaks, and they should not be something to fear.

Restarting the computer will solve the issue, and you will notice how it improves Mac’s speed. If you are reluctant to restart the Mac regularly because it takes too long to load, enable the auto-login feature and remove applications from the startup item list.

Suggestion #9 – Reinstall macOS

If the performance is still making you unhappy, reinstalling the operating system is still an option on the table. It may take a while, but giving the computer a fresh start may be just the thing to solve all the performance woes.

If you have not reinstalled the OS before, ask someone to help you, or look for a step-by-step guide online. Also, create data backups since reinstalling the OS will wipe it.
